Ash (Fraxinus) is one of the most widespread trees in continental Croatia, especially in floodplain forests along the Sava, Drava, and Kupa rivers. Although in clinical literature it often remains in the shadow of birch, ash is nearly equally a strong allergen and coincides with the peak of spring pollen season — in sensitive individuals it further extends and intensifies the discomfort of March.

Ash species in Croatia

  • narrow-leafed ash (Fraxinus angustifolia) — dominant in lowland floodplain forests of Posavina, Lonjsko Polje, and Spačva Basin
  • common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) — hilly and mountain areas, mixed deciduous forests
  • manna ash (Fraxinus ornus) — warmer, drier areas and the coast, common on limestone terrain

All three species are wind-pollinated and release large quantities of pollen from catkins that develop before leaves appear, so the wind carries pollen over large distances from the nearest trees.

Season

  • March through April, depending on species and region
  • peak: mid-April
  • on the coast (manna ash) flowering starts a bit earlier, in the continental region later
  • overlaps with the peak of birch, so symptoms may seem even more pronounced than they actually are

How strong an allergen is it

Ash is classified among the stronger woody allergens — clinical assessments rank it nearly at the level of birch, and above oak. The main allergen (Fra e 1) triggers clear symptoms in sensitive individuals, and in combination with birch pollen the burden on the airways can be substantial.

Cross-reactions

Ash belongs to the family Oleaceae, like olive, lilac, and snowball viburnum. Due to the similarity of main allergens, there is cross-reactivity with olive — people who react to olive on the coast often react to ash in continental Croatia, and vice versa. This is an important bridge between the coastal and continental allergen profiles.

With birch and the rest of the Fagales order (alder, hazel, oak) ash is not botanically related, but seasons overlap so simultaneous sensitivity is common — and it is easy to overlook which plant actually triggers the symptoms.

Symptoms

  • watery discharge and nasal congestion
  • sneezing in fits in the morning
  • itching and redness of the eyes
  • itching of the palate and throat
  • in sensitive individuals — worsening asthma

Since ash's season almost completely overlaps with birch, without targeted testing it is difficult to distinguish the contribution of each allergen. For allergy sufferers living near floodplain forests in Posavina and Slavonia, ash's contribution can be significantly larger than initially assumed.

Diagnosis

  • skin prick tests for ash, birch, and olive simultaneously
  • specific IgE blood tests (Fra e 1, along with Bet v 1 and Ole e 1) when skin tests are unreliable
  • assessment of how much of the symptoms are due to ash versus birch — for allergy sufferers from Posavina this is not an uncommon topic

What helps

  • Second-generation antihistamines through the spring season
  • Nasal corticosteroid spray started 1–2 weeks before March
  • Eye drops for allergic conjunctivitis
  • Pollen filter in the car, especially when driving through floodplain forests and tree-lined roads
  • Shower and change clothes after prolonged time outdoors
  • Specific immunotherapy is usually planned according to birch as the leading spring allergen; whether to include ash or olive is decided by the allergist based on test results
