Pollen and allergies — Split

Split is the largest city in Dalmatia, located on a peninsula with the pine forest of Marjan above the city and olive groves inland. The Mediterranean climate gives it an early start to the pollen season and a profile dominated by olive, wall pellitory, and cypress.

Main allergens and season

  • Late winter and early spring (January–March): cypress and other cypress species (Cupressaceae).
  • Spring (April–June): olive as the leading spring allergen; pine from Marjan produces abundant, visible pollen but is a weak allergen.
  • Spring through autumn (March–October): wall pellitory (Parietaria), widespread on the stone walls of the old city, with an unusually long season.

Wind (especially sirocco and bora) significantly alters pollen concentration in the air, so risk assessment is linked to the current forecast.
