Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) is the most potent pollen allergen we track. North Macedonia is among the most heavily affected countries in Europe: across the Skopje basin and along the Vardar valley, ragweed pollen concentrations regularly exceed the levels at which even people with no previous history begin to react. A single ragweed pollen grain provokes a stronger response than a grain from most other plants, and one mature plant releases billions of grains per season.

How it reached North Macedonia

Ragweed is native to North America. It arrived in Europe in the late 19th century, mostly as a contaminant in imported seed, and spread widely after the Second World War. It was recorded in Macedonia in the second half of the 20th century and has since become one of the most widespread weeds on arable land, stubble fields, and neglected ground.

The plant is exceptionally adaptable: it is first to colonize any open, disturbed soil — embankments, building sites, road and railway verges, uncultivated fields. Its seed stays viable in the soil for more than a decade, which is why pulling it once, without repeating the effort in following years, achieves little.

How to recognize it

  • Height: usually 30–150 cm, over two meters on fertile ground.
  • Leaves: pinnately divided, green on both sides — this distinguishes it from mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), which is silvery-white underneath.
  • Stem: branched, hairy, often reddish at the base.
  • Flowers: small, greenish-yellow, in upright spike-like clusters at the tips of the branches.

Confusing it with mugwort is the most common identification error. A practical rule: turn the leaf over. Green on both sides means ragweed; whitish underneath means mugwort.

Distribution in North Macedonia

The heaviest burden is in the Skopje basin — the combination of arable land, post-harvest stubble, and a network of field tracks suits ragweed perfectly. Skopje, Kumanovo, and the surrounding area regularly record the highest values in the country.

The Vardar valley is a case of its own: alongside its population density, the river's course has large stretches of unmanaged land, on embankments and undeveloped plots, so exposure is high even without an agricultural hinterland.

In Pelagonia — Bitola, Prilep — ragweed is present and clinically relevant, but concentrations are as a rule lower than in the Skopje basin. The lightest burden is in the mountainous areas (Ohrid, Šar Mountain), where altitude and less arable land limit its spread.

Season

Ragweed flowers from mid-August to the end of September, peaking in late August and early September. Only the first hard frost ends the season, so in warm autumns symptoms can continue into October.

Pollen is released mainly in the morning, and the wind carries it far: significant amounts have been measured hundreds of kilometers from the nearest source, so even a city with no ragweed nearby can have bad days when the wind blows in from the basin.

Symptoms

  • persistent sneezing and a runny nose
  • blocked nose and difficulty breathing through it
  • itchy, red, watering eyes
  • itching of the palate, throat, and ear canals
  • worsening asthma — ragweed is among the pollens with the most pronounced effect on the lower airways
  • fatigue and poor concentration from disturbed sleep

In some patients the first season with marked symptoms comes only after several years of exposure, so the trouble is often put down to a cold or "summer flu".

Cross-reactions with food

Ragweed pollen cross-reacts with several foods, most often from the gourd family:

  • watermelon, melon, cucumber, courgette
  • banana
  • chamomile and sunflower seeds

The reaction is usually oral allergy syndrome — itching and mild swelling of the lips, tongue, and palate shortly after eating, as a rule without serious consequences. Symptoms are more pronounced during the season, and cooking the food usually reduces or removes them. Ragweed also cross-reacts with mugwort, which flowers somewhat earlier, so sensitive people often face an extended season of trouble from July into October.

Treatment

Medication

  • Second-generation antihistamines relieve sneezing, itching, and discharge.
  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays work best when started before the season begins — that means early August, not with the first symptoms.
  • Eye drops help with allergic conjunctivitis.
  • People with asthma should review their treatment with a doctor before August, rather than during a flare-up.

Immunotherapy

Specific immunotherapy (SLIT or SCIT) for ragweed is available and well documented. It runs over several years, is prescribed by an allergist, and in a large share of patients permanently reduces symptoms and the need for medication.

Control

Ragweed is recognized in North Macedonia as a harmful weed, and landowners and land users are obliged to remove it; municipal inspectorates and local ordinances set deadlines and penalties, and cities organize seasonal clearance campaigns.

What actually helps:

  • Mowing before flowering, and repeatedly — after a single cut the plant regenerates and flowers lower down.
  • Pulling it up by the root on smaller areas, wearing gloves and a mask, ideally before the flower spikes appear.
  • Grassing over bare ground — a dense lawn leaves ragweed no room.
  • Reporting neglected plots to the municipal inspectorate; work on your own garden has limited reach if the plot next door stays untended.

Practical measures for allergy sufferers

  • Shower and wash your hair after time outdoors, and keep worn clothing out of the bedroom.

  • If you travel, bear in mind that the mountainous areas are far less affected than the basins.
