Pollen and allergies — Niš
Niš lies in the Niš basin on the Nišava, at the crossroads of the Južna Morava, Nišava, and Toplica valleys. The basin is enclosed by Suva Planina, the Svrljig mountains, and Seličevica, and the climate is warmer than in Šumadija, with a sub-Mediterranean influence pushing up from the south along the Južna Morava valley. As a result the pollen season in Niš starts earlier than in most Serbian cities, and the summer is warm enough for ragweed to flower abundantly.
Main allergens and season
- Late winter and early spring (February–March): alder along the Nišava and the Južna Morava and in the riverside woods of the basin; in mild winters flowering begins as early as late January.
- Spring (April–May): birch along city streets and in parks, together with ash and hornbeam from the slopes around the basin.
- Late spring and summer (May–July): grasses from the Niš field, the meadows and pastures on the rim of the basin, and the embankments along the Nišava.
- Late summer (August–September): ragweed on uncultivated plots, along the bypass, and on embankments; mugwort leads the way from July. Values are lower than in Vojvodina, but high enough for sensitive people to have pronounced symptoms.
