Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lies in a valley along the Miljacka river, ringed by the mountains Trebević, Jahorina and Bjelašnica. A continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, together with frequent winter temperature inversions that trap polluted air in the valley — which also affects the air quality index (AQI) — favors a diverse pollen season.
Main allergens and season
- Winter and early spring (February–April): alder along watercourses and hazel in wet, shaded spots, then birch from the surrounding forests — often the main spring allergen in the valley.
- Late spring and summer (May–July): grasses from the meadows and pastures around the city.
- Late summer (August–September): ragweed, especially along roads, construction sites and abandoned land.
