Pollen and allergies — Berane
Berane is in north-eastern Montenegro, in the Berane basin through which the Lim flows. The basin is ringed by wooded mountains, the climate is continental, and spring arrives later than in the Zeta plain — the pollen season in Berane as a rule runs two to three weeks behind Podgorica, but tree pollen is more pronounced here in exchange.
Main allergens and season
- Early spring (February–April): alder along the Lim and its tributaries — in the Polimlje region alder is one of the most abundant waterside species.
- Spring (April–May): birch, which grows naturally in northern Montenegro on clearings, forest edges, and abandoned pasture; for allergy sufferers in Berane this is the clinically most important woody allergen.
- Summer (June–July): grasses from the meadows and pastures of the basin and the surrounding hills; the season starts later but runs deep into July.
- Late summer (August–September): mugwort along roads and on neglected land; ragweed is present in the Lim valley but at low concentrations.
- Olive does not grow in this area.
