Pollen and allergies — Kumanovo
Kumanovo lies in the Kumanovo basin, on the Pčinja river, in the northeastern part of North Macedonia, near the border with Serbia. The basin position and the agricultural land around it — cereals, meadows, pastures — shape its pollen season, and the proximity of the Vardar valley and the basin means ragweed is an important late-summer allergen.
Main allergens and season
- Late winter and early spring (February–March): alder along the Pčinja and in the riverside woods of the Kumanovo basin — the first pollen of the year.
- Spring (April–May): birch in the city greenery and parks, alongside it ash.
- Late spring and summer (May–July): grasses are the longest season — the meadows and pastures of the basin give abundant pollen.
- Late summer (August–September): ragweed is the hardest stretch of the year for many of Kumanovo's allergy sufferers, with mugwort leading the way from July. The highest values occur when the wind blows in from the basin.
