Pollen and allergies — Tetovo
Tetovo lies in the Polog basin, at the foot of Šar Mountain, on the Pena river. The position between the high mountains and the plain of Polog gives the basin a specific pollen dynamic: through the summer, pollen from grasses descends from the mountain meadows and pastures of Šar Mountain, while in the basin itself the agricultural land and the unmanaged belts along the river carry their own load.
Main allergens and season
- Late winter and early spring (February–March): alder along the Pena and in the riverside woods of Polog — the first pollen of the year.
- Spring (April–May): birch in the city greenery and parks, alongside it ash.
- Late spring and summer (May–July): grasses are the longest season — the meadows and pastures of Šar Mountain and Polog give abundant pollen, and the season in the mountain meadows lasts longer than on the plain.
- Late summer (August–September): ragweed on unmanaged land along roads and on neglected plots, with mugwort leading the way from July.
